Skunk Removal & Control

What smells, is black and white, and wants to burrow under your porch for shelter? Why a skunk, of course. Not only can a skunk cause damage to your house—shredded insulation and torn up screen vents—but they can also harm humans and pets with their noxious fumes and carry diseases such as rabies. If you have one of these striped animals on your property, it’s time to consider how to get rid of a skunk, quickly and successfully.

Getting rid of skunks

The best way to ensure a skunk-free house is to prevent the critters from moving in:

  • Keep your property tidy. Skunks look for shelter during the cold winter nights and early in the spring to birth their young. Remove unused piles of wood or old rotted logs. Repair missing boards of porches, decks or sheds.
  • Don’t feed the wildlife. Although skunks generally eat small rodents, grubs, eggs, insects, berries, nuts and other grains, they will adapt and eat garbage, pet food and birdseed if it’s available. Secure your trash bins. Don’t leave pet food outside between meals, and clean up large amounts of uneaten birdseed.
  • Seal up openings to buildings. Warning: Make sure no wildlife is currently in the structure before sealing an entryway—the entrance most likely is the only exit! It’s much more difficult for a skunk control professional to crawl into a skunk den and remove a dead animal than for a skunk to walk out on its own. (And, a dead skunk will also have released it’s infamous stink oil!)

If you do have an unwanted skunk guest, you’ll want to keep the following items in mind during your skunk removal strategy:

  • Most states do not allow you to transport and release wildlife. Call a seasoned wildlife control specialist who is licensed and insured to trap the skunk—and who will humanely encourage the skunk to make its home elsewhere.
  • A scared or cornered skunk is likely to spray. If you see the striped rodent stamping its feet angrily or showing you its backside—you are about to be skunk tagged! They can easily spray 10 feet, accurately! It’s best to let a skunk professional experienced in getting rid of skunks solve your stinky skunk problem.
  • A skunk (or any wild animal) may have rabies. If you or your pet is bitten, get medical help immediately.
