Raccoon Removal & Control

Raccoons, with their black face masks and reputation for washing their food, might look cute on TV, but when you hear a chitter and a growl from your attic at night, it’s time to get serious about raccoon removal.

Getting rid of raccoons

If you do have a raccoon or a momma raccoon with her kits living in your attic, garage, chimney, porch or other space, our licensed and insured raccoon control professionals can show you how to get rid of raccoons in a safe and humane manner.

As a homeowner, there are some key points to remember about these masked pests:

  • Laws about wildlife removal vary by state. Transporting and releasing raccoons is often illegal, and can be bad for both the current raccoon population and the new raccoon. (Diseases can be introduced or the transplanted raccoon may struggle to survive in a new environment.)
  • Don’t play with raccoon poop. Raccoon droppings can carry roundworm and cause diseases in humans and pets. Be especially careful not to inhale the dropping dust!
  • Don’t burn or smoke a raccoon out of your chimney. Not only is it inhumane (a mother raccoon might be able to escape, but her kits probably can’t) but it is dangerous for you and your house.
  • Don’t corner a sick or injured raccoon. These masked bandits sometimes carry rabies and other diseases such as distemper, so it’s best to call a wildlife control professional to handle the problem.

Prevention is the best way to ensure that raccoons stay wild and don’t live in your home. These tips will help keep raccoons and other wildlife away—but remember don’t board up an entryway if you have a raccoon or other animal inside, that entryway may also be its only exit!

  • Look for and repair possible openings to your home. (Note: Make sure there aren’t any uninvited guests before closing the entryway or you could be creating additional problems! In the spring, momma raccoons may forage for food, leaving her young in the den.) Are there damaged or rotted boards around your foundation, deck or porch? Get’em fixed.
  • Install a chimney cap. (Again, make sure no wildlife is living in your chimney before eliminating entry—and exit points.)
  • Don’t feed the raccoons. As omnivores, raccoons consider unsecured garbage lids, leftover pet food and barbeque remains a Welcome To The Neighborhood buffet. So batten down those refuse lids, only feed your cat or dog what they can eat in one sitting, and clean up after any outdoor food gatherings.

If you keep the area clean and close off openings to your structures, your chance of unwanted home invaders greatly decreases—but sometimes those clever animals just don’t take the hint. Before donning your space invader costume from last year and grabbing your butterfly net to remove a wild animal yourself, call experienced, licensed and insured professionals for help getting rid of raccoons from your deck, porch, attic, shed or chimney.
