An Unlikely Pairing: A Pest Control Company Saving Pollinators One Garden at a Time

An Unlikely Pairing: A Pest Control Company Saving Pollinators One Garden at a Time

By Melissa L. - 06/22/18

Debug Pest Control is putting its team to work saving honeybees (and gosh, it’s pretty)

Drive through downtown Chepachet, Rhode Island and you might be surprised to see a pollinator garden in the center of the new rotary. A closer look might leave you more surprised: the pollinator garden was planted by our pest control company - Debug Pest Control. People don’t usually equate “saving bugs” with a pest control company. But at Debug, we like to say that we can tell the Good Guys from the Bad Guys, and we like to help the Good Guys whenever we can.

At Debug Pest Control we’ve tried to save honeybees whenever we can. We try to educate our customers about the differences between honeybees and their aggressive cousins - wasps and yellowjackets.  When we encounter honeybees in a home or business, we call in an expert beekeeper and have the hive removed and relocated to an area farm.

This year, we wanted to take our commitment to honeybees and other beneficial pollinators one big step forward. We had joined the Pledge 1% effort and were committed to donating 1% of our effort and 1% of our revenue towards local charities and community projects. We wanted one big tangible effort that our community could plainly see. So, we went ahead and adopted the large traffic rotary at the center of Chepachet.  We worked with the State to plan a Pollinator Garden in the rotary. The State readily (and excitedly) agreed, and we started working.

Milkweed, Bee Balm, Lavender, Hyssop are beautiful ways to bring honey bees and butterflies into your garden.

We selected native species and species of plant that attract honey bees and pollinators. Our team prepped the soil, planted the plants, mulched, weeded, and watered all summer. We created signage to let passersby know that the garden was a Pollinator Garden, in an effort to help spread the word about pollinators.

The feedback from the community has been tremendous. The State Highway Department reached out to us to ask if they could emulate our pollinator garden plan throughout the State at every one of their adoptable traffic islands.

We learned a lot about ourselves this year, as a business and as individuals. We’ve laughed together, sweat together, and reaped the reward of giving. Who knew that you could get so much from giving?
